How funky is your chicken...(the ultimate chicken salt recipe)

By Jessica Kerr

Golden, crispy hot chips. Whether you're a dedicated vinegar adder or a purist who goes all in on chicken salt, there's no denying the joy of a well-seasoned fry. That addictive, umami-packed sprinkle that takes humble chips from good to can't stop, won't stop levels? You can make it at home, and it’s ridiculously easy. Bonus: No more mystery ingredients, just pure flavour.

This homemade chicken salt recipe, originally by @tastelessbaker, is perfectly balanced with savoury depth, a little tang, and that signature golden hue. Shake it over your next batch of hot chips, crispy roasted spuds or BBQ veg and prepare to never go back to store-bought salt again.

Ingredients

  • 40g salt
  • 12g garlic powder
  • 12g chicken stock powder
  • 7g sweet paprika
  • ¾ tsp sumac
  • ¾ tsp ground coriander seed
  • ¾ tsp white pepper
  • ¾ tsp onion powder

Method

  1. Mix all the spices together in a bowl until well combined.
  2. Taste and tweak if you need things a lil more salty (the test kitchen crew were split down the middle on that one, but were unanimous in agreeing it was DELICIOUS)
  3. Sprinkle generously over hot chips (or anything else your heart desires).
  4. Store the extra in a cute little jar so you're always ready to level up snack time.
