Gettin’ Cheeky: The Ultimate Citrus Juicing Hack

By Jessica Kerr

Ready to get the most out of your citrus? If you’ve ever struggled to squeeze more than a few drops, or ended up with juice running everywhere but your glass, you’re not alone. These simple tricks will help you get every last bit of juice—no fancy gadgets required. Whether you’re mixing up margaritas, tossing together a zesty salad, or just want to brighten your sparkling water, here’s how to juice citrus like a pro.

How to Get Maximum Juice from Your Citrus:

1. Roll With It

Before you cut, give your citrus (lime, lemon, orange, or even grapefruit) a firm roll on the bench or chopping board. Press down and roll back and forth—you’ll feel it start to soften. This helps break up the juice pockets inside so the juice will flow more freely when you cut it.

2. Get Cheeky

Instead of slicing your citrus straight down the middle, try this:

  1. Place your citrus on its side. Cut a chunk off one side, just off-centre from the white pith in the middle—this is your first “cheek.”
  2. Repeat on the other side so you have two juicy cheeks and a central piece left over.
  3. The cheeks are much easier to squeeze and will give you maximum juice with less effort. You can still squeeze the middle chunk for extra juice, too!

3. Tongs for the Win

If squeezing isn’t your superpower (or you just want every drop), grab your kitchen tongs. Place a citrus cheek in the tongs and give it a firm press. This gives you way more leverage—and saves your hands.
